Dromana House and Gate
Overview
We had the pleasure of working on the heritage and conseravtion project at Dromana House and Gate, a beautiful historic site located in Waterford. Dromana House is a magnificent mansion surrounded by beautiful gardens, while the Dromana Gate marks the entrance to the estate.
The origins of Dromana House can be traced back to the 17th century when it was built by Sir Edward Harris, a prominent Anglo-Irish family. The original house was a modest structure, but it was later expanded and remodeled into a Georgian-style mansion in the 18th century. The design of the house was influenced by renowned architect John Roberts, who was known for his work in Ireland during that era.
The Dromana Gate, an imposing entrance archway, stands as a significant feature of the estate. The gate was constructed in the early 19th century and serves as a grand entrance to the house. It is made of stone and features intricate carvings and details that showcase the craftsmanship of the time
Deliverables
We started by surveying the Dromana Gate. To do this we first used laser scanners to capture points we could use to create our 3D model. We then carried out a photogrammetric survey using a drone to capture images and points from the sky that our laser scanners would be able to capture.
At Dromana House we carried out another photogrammetric survey in order to capture all aspects of the building, including some of the remaining structure from the original house. We then used these pictures to make a 3D model.
The Final Product
After collecting all of these data points and images we were able to create our finished product. We created a 3D model for extraction of orthorectified elevation for conservation and heritage architects.
These models will allow conservationists to maintain the buildings’ original structures without damaging any of the original infrastructure. These kinds of surveys are vital to preserving our history which in turn allows us to understand our history and ancestors better.
